The aim of group discussions in English key stage 2 learning
Group discussions are a vital teaching element for pupils doing English KS2. The main aim of group discussions is to talk effectively as group members.
The pupils are taught how to make contributions that are pertinent to the discussion. This gives direction to the discussion. They are taught how to build a group and make it effective. They are taught how to make summaries of main points in order to remember them with ease. They review what they have said and how to draw meaningful conclusions. This is a chance to teach the pupils the importance of turn-taking when talking.
These pupils are taught how to disagree in a polite way and listen to the other person’s opinion. They can then justify their own after listening to others. Leadership is molded in such groups. The pupils are given a chance to pick a group leader and also assume other positions. They are taught how to respect authority.
